Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco dampers fall into two main lines: the cast-iron throat dampers (model prefixes GTD and GCD) and the stainless top-sealing dampers (model prefix GTD-TS). The throat models are what you’ll find in most pre-1990 Wilmington masonry fireplaces, especially the squat, wide fireboxes common in Colonial Revival homes near Trolley Square. The top-sealing units mount at the flue tile and use a cable-and-handle system that runs down the flue wall.

To identify yours, look for a stamped model number on the damper frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight. Cast-iron throats usually show a four-digit code near the hinge pin. Top-sealers have a label on the cap assembly itself, readable from the roof or with a camera. If the label’s gone, measure the flue opening: Gelco throat dampers come in 30″, 32″, 36″, and 42″ nominal widths, but the critical dimension is the actual throat width at the narrowest point, which often runs 1/2″ to 3/4″ under nominal in these older homes.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle spins without resistance. The linkage between the handle spindle and the damper plate has either corroded through or the cotter pin has sheared. On Gelco throat dampers, this pin sits in a wet zone and rusts out in 12-18 years in Wilmington’s humidity, faster if the chimney crown leaks.
• The plate is visible but canted or dropped on one side. One of the hinge ears has cracked off the cast-iron frame. This is common on GCD-series dampers installed in the 1970s and 1980s; the cast iron fatigues at the thin section near the pivot bolt. Once an ear goes, the plate jams or falls completely.
• You feel a cold draft even when the damper is “closed.” The plate is warped, the frame is out of square from settling, or rust has pitted the seating surface. Gelco throat dampers seal by gravity alone, so any distortion breaks the seal. In Wilmington’s nor’easter season, you’ll notice this at the first hard wind.
• The cable handle on a top-sealer won’t stay latched. The spring tension in the GTD-TS cap assembly has weakened, or the cable housing has kinked where it passes the smoke shelf. Cables fray internally before they break, so a gritty feel in the handle is early warning.
• You smell smoke or hear whistling during a fire. The damper is stuck partially open, or the plate has detached and is blocking part of the throat. This is the failure mode that drives most calls. It’s also the one that costs you the most in heated air escaping up the flue year-round.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things you can safely check yourself. Verify the handle set screw hasn’t backed out. Look for obvious debris on the smoke shelf that’s jamming the plate. Confirm the cable housing on a top-sealer hasn’t slipped its bracket.

What you should not do: reach up into the throat with the plate unstable, try to force a rust-welded plate with a pry bar, or attempt to remove a cast-iron frame without supporting the surrounding brickwork.
